Homosassa Springs

After visiting with Kim and Gary for a few days, we headed up north to New Port Richey to stay with Mike’s parents.  They knew of a really cool wild animal park up in Homosassa Springs, so we made the drive up there and discovered that it was totally AWESOME!  We took a boat ride along a small river to get to the springs area, then we had a picnic and walked around for about 2 hours looking at all the cool wildlife.  The park was so naturally preserved and it felt really special since we were so close up to everything we got to see.  It was a really great afternoon!  All of the animals in the park are native to the area, with the exception of the Hippopotamus.  Apparently when the state bought the land from a private owner they had exotic animals, and they couldn’t find a home for anyone who wanted to take on a 5,000 lb hippo.  So they told us that the park employees went through a lengthy process of making the hippo an official resident of the state and now they call him a local:)

We saw manatees, the hippo, a bobcat, snakes, alligators (big AND little!), flamingos, pelicans, falcons, owls, otters, a red wolf, bald eagles, turtles, ducks, cormorants, and lots of mullet!  Some of my fave pics below:)
